Weymouth and Portland await royal visit

Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, will visit the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) on 11 June.

The Royal Party will meet Olympic hopefuls in training as well as local people who are learning to sail.

John Tweed, Chief Executive of the WPNSA, said: “It is an enormous honour for the Academy that both Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will be coming to see the completed Olympic Delivery Authority works and the Chesil Trust ‘Sail for a Fiver‘ programme.”

The WPNSA’s ‘Sail for a fiver’ programme with the Chesil Trust offers subsidised Royal Yachting Association sailing courses in conjunction with SailLaser for children and young people who are disabled or at a social disadvantage.

A further community involvement initiative is planned at the Academy, offering family groups of up to four people the chance to have a sail for £10, from 11 July as part of the ‘Spirit of the Sea’ Festival.
