It might be down to the batteries

Small inboard diesels, especially single cylinder engines, can struggle to achieve top revs when they’re also being asked to charge a low battery – the alternator can impose too great a load on the engine. So it’s worth checking the battery voltage to see if it’s low – the engine should regain its revs once the battery is charged. If the battery is charged fully, it’s probably another problem entirely!
