Extension preferred to Hamworthy marina
An extension to Poole Quay Boat Haven has emerged as the most likely source of new berths in Poole.
An independent strategic environmental assessment showed that a seaward extension to the existing marina (pictured) would have less environmental impact than a brand-new, 900-berth marina at Hamworthy Park.
Jim Stewart, chief executive of Poole Harbour Commissioners, who commissioned the report, said: ‘Looking at all of these issues it clearly emerged that the environmental impact is greater with the Hamworthy option than the Poole Quay Boat Haven extension.
‘The Poole Quay Boat Haven extension is now our preferred option.’
A year’s consultation which included more than 60 meetings with residents and groups also pointed towards the extension.
Detailed designs for the marina extension have yet to be completed and six more weeks of consultation have just begun.
The consultation, which runs until November 6, means that the Hamworthy Park option is not dead yet.
Mike Barnett, whose petition against the Hamworthy marina received more than 1,000 signatures, told the Bournemouth Echo that it was ‘ brilliant news’.
He said the Hamworthy option has ‘absolutely no virtue’.
