RYA suspension for storm force 11 yacht owners

No more practical courses while under investigation

Liquid Vortex rescue RNLI

Hot Liquid, the company that owns the yacht Liquid Vortex which was rescued off Dover in Tuesday's Force 11, has been suspended from running UK practical RYA courses.

Speaking to PBO today at the first day of the London Boat Show, the RYA said that they imposed the suspension yesterday, while they work with investigators looking into exactly what happened.

Liquid Vortex, a Bénéteau 40.7, ran into trouble in Tuesday's horrendous weather, with seven mainly paying crew aboard, all but one of whom became incapacitated. The subsequent rescue involved two RNLI lifeboats and an RAF helicopter.

Hot Liquid are best known as a sailing school with bases in the UK and Gibraltar, and since their inception in 2005 have trained some 3,500 people.

Rather than suspend this company, make a trip out in a Force 11 on their 42 foot 'Bendy Toy' part of the Yawtmaster Orfshore examination? Maybe proper' seaworthy deep keeled yachts would make a comeback at London and Southampton shows.

So much for innocent until proven guilty. I read the story and didn't see anything to indicate recklessness. In fact, it seemed that a reasonable degree of caution was exercised.

Poor seamanship is exactly that - not a fault of their yacht if the crew are not competent. We urgently need a review of sea training, there are too many poor providors and unless regulation is enforced rather than seen as an income stream by the RYA there will be a loss of life. Will this company be contributing to the costs of the RNLI?

So what value are all the RYA Certificates previously awarded by this company - and for any RYA Certificate I suppose since presumably the skippers / owners of the company have "qualifications" awarded to them by someone else who thought they were competent?

Liquid Fusion (belonging to Hot Liquid) ran aground on the Goodwins a year ago, apparently from over confidence or lax navigation - maybe that's a factor in the RYA's action.
