It's a good plan to check your outboard every time you use it. A few minutes spent completing these quick checks could spell the difference between lfe and death for your engine.
Check the oil, if you have a 4-stroke.
Check the screw-clamps to avoid a quick dip.
Check for fishing line wrapped around the propeller hub. This can cause the gearbox seal to fail.
Once the engine is running, check for the tell-tale stream.
Check you have enough fuel for your trip...
...and don't forget to flush the cooling system daily.
