John Taylor finds a car steering rack gaiter stops leaks from the lifting cable of his swing keel

I had a problem with water squirting up where the lifting cable came out the top of the case on my Kelt 5.5 swing-keeler.

I had tried various grommets and bungs without success until I hit on a new idea. I acquired a car steering rack gaiter – I scrounged mine from the oddments box of my friendly local garage – screwed it onto a thin bed of sealant on the top of the centreboard case, with the wire exiting through the end, and it works a treat!

The cost was zero: if you wanted to assemble a similar device, you could also paint the gaiter with flexible paint.
