Boat went aground on an island in the dark

One man died and three others were injured when they hit an island in Tobermory Bay on Monday night. Members of the public raised the alarm after hearing the boat crash shortly after leaving Tobermory in darkness.

The men, who were divers, left Tobermory for Loch Aline, but collided with Calve Island in the darkness and ran aground. They were wearing drysuits but no lifejackets.

Clyde coastguard requested the assistance of Tobermory RNLI lifeboat. The lifeboat launched at 11:45pm and rescued the four men, one of whom had serious head injuries and was unconscious.

First aid was administered by lifeboat crew, and the men were transferred to an ambulance onshore. Sadly, one of them was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. The other three were transferred to Dunaros Hospital on Mull.
