Twin Sails Bridge due to open in March 2012

A 30m (100ft) ‘sail’ on Poole’s Twin Sails Bridge has been spotted lifted for the first time today ahead of the bridge’s expected March opening.

The development comes almost a year to the day since construction began on the £37million lifting bridge that will span Backwater Channel in Holes Bay to link Poole town centre with Hamworthy.

Upon completion the bridge will be 139m (456ft) long and accommodate two vehicle lanes, two cycle lanes and two footpaths.

The bridge’s construction is part of a wider regeneration of the Hamworthy area, which may also include a new £25million, 950-berth marina near the current site of Poole Yacht Club.

It is not yet known how the Twin Sails Bridge’s opening times will be coordinated with the sole, existing bridge across the channel, but, when opened, there will be a unobstructed channel of 19m between the main piers.
