Without getting disorientated

Helming in fog can be extremely disorientating – and with no visual references it’s hard to get a feel for the heading. That’s why if you have an autopilot it’s a good idea to let it steer in fog, with a hand near the ‘standby’ button in case of close contacts. It won’t get distracted or disorientated, and will free your senses up to peer into the murk and listen out.
