The trick is to ease miles on the mainsheet

Lazyjacks are great – they collect the mainsail and stop it flying free – but they can make hoisting the main difficult. Here’s a tip – you don’t need to be exactly head to wind – just make sure you’re nearly there – and here’s the important bit – that the kicker is loose and the mainsheet has miles of slack in it. This means the boom can swing to the wind, depower itself and keep the sail clear of the lazyjacks.
