Musto EVO Crew jacket: how breathable and waterproof is it while day sailing and walking?
When day sailing in the UK you often have to gamble on the weather which can make your choice of outer layer challenging – too heavy and bulky, you risk overheating; too thin and you risk getting cold on deck. The Musto EVO Crew jacket is a good solution.
It is lightweight, waterproof and has quite a bit of stretch making it an ideal outer layer when crewing as well as on land, as I found out when I wore it while hiking the Tinners’ Way in Cornwall on a wet May weekend.

I have worn the jacket on a few day sails, although full disclosure, there was no rain. It is certainly windproof, comfortable to wear and the articulated sleeves mean you are unrestricted for winching and pulling lines; it also packs down really small.
Walking 15 miles along the Cornish coast and moors in claggy fog with occasional downpours was the real test of the breathability and waterproofness of the mesh lining and 2-layer polyester fabric; it kept me dry and my body temperature well-regulated while carrying my day pack and negotiating (some pretty steep) hills and climbs.

The hood fit was excellent, and I have a particularly small head; it also folds away into the jacket collar when you do not need it.
There is a chest pocket that just about held my large Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Phone. The side pockets were also useful for storing a knife, snacks, torch, whistle etc. There are also reflective seams above the pockets.

This jacket is not designed for harsh, extreme weather and offshore conditions, but if you spend most of your time coastal and day sailing (with the occasional hike thrown in), it will certainly tick the box.
