P&O resumes crossings to most ports

Dunkirk and Calais have been re-opened after protests by French fishermen since Tuesday. Boulogne remains closed.

The P&O ferries website update for 08h00 on Thursday 16th April 09states:

The French fishermen have lifted their blockade of Calais port. From 09h15 our services will be operating normally as per schedule.

According to the BBC, French fishing unions have been protesting at ever tougher EU-imposed quotas, and demanding the French government take a stand on their behalf or offer more financial assistance.

On Wednesday, French ministers refused protesters’ demands for increased cod quotas, but said they might offer extra financial support.

The MCA were advising yachtsmen not to set out for these ports yesterday after actions by the fishermen including blocking the NW traffic lane through the Straits of Dover and blockading the port with boats, chains and rope.

The RYA advised preparing your boat and crew for the possibility that the preferred destination may be closed, including extra provisions and navigation information for smaller ports nearby.
