Explanation of keel failure that led to tragic death off SW England earlier this year

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has published its report and flyers to the industry following its investigation into the keel failure and capsize of the yachtHooligan V and the loss of one of its crew, 10 miles south of Prawle Point on 3 February 2007.

The report found problems with the keel’s design and found that the production of the design incorporated changes that further weakened the steel structure. In addition,Hooligan V’s keel had had an extra 160kg (352.8lb) added in 2005, without any change to construction of the keel.
