Unless she's naked...

Well-known maritime superstition: It was once believed that women were less capable of withstanding the harsh life at sea, while also distracting the men aboard. This would anger the seas and doom the ship, it was thought. However, it was believed that the bare breasts of a woman would shame the seas and make them calm, hence the half-naked figurine often seen beneath the bowsprit of tall ships (and others)!
