One way to break out an anchor in waves

Weighing anchor can be hard work – especially when it comes to breaking it out of the bottom. Here’s one way to do it in waves. As the bow dips into the trough of a wave, pull the slack out of the anchor rope and make it fast around a cleat. As the boat rises on the next wave, it should lift the anchor out of the bottom, leaving you with only the weight of the anchor to pull up. Don’t try this if the waves are too big, however, as if the anchor is well dug in, it could trap fingers or even damage a cleat.
