Write something for publication in PBO

Practical Boat Owner – Britain’s biggest-selling yachting magazine

Contributors’ Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in writing an article for Practical Boat Owner.

To help you present your article in the most publishing-friendly way, we have prepared these basic guidelines on how to send us your words and photos.

Feature articles are between 1,500 and 2,500 words long. For feature articles we will also need around 50 words about you, the author, and a head-and-shoulders photo.

Other sections of the magazine, including Practical Projects, Cruising Notes, News, Learning from Experience and Bosun’s Bag, are composed of shorter pieces. Please look at the magazine to get an idea of the length of article we print.

Please type your article, or get someone to type it for you.

How to send

Articles should be supplied in Word (or its OpenOffice equivalent) document format, with photos as separate .jpgs. We cannot accept Word docs containing embedded photos.

Please do not send any filetypes other than Word (or OpenOffice) and .jpg – no PowerPoint, Publisher, PDF etc – as we cannot accept them either.

Ideally, photos should be supplied as high-resolution .jpgs (our production process is digital), but we can still accept transparencies and prints. Please send plenty of photographs to illustrate the various points made in your article. The more the better!

NB if you are sending digital photos: Unfortunately, high-resolution image files quickly overload our email inbox, so if you are sending your article by email, please attach one sample high-res photo (always .jpg format), and a few more low-res samples. Then, if we want to see more, we will ask you to send them by post on a CD.

Do feel free to send a large selection of high-res photos on CD by post, in the first instance, if you wish. Please accompany the CD with a print-out of your Word doc. If you can add a print-out of captioned thumbnails, even better!

Filenames should not exceed 30 characters, including the file extension (ie ‘.jpg’), nor should they contain any spaces or punctuation marks (eg slashes, question marks).

We have very few available slots for uncommissioned articles however if yours is on a subject we’re looking for it stands a chance of being published. If you prefer not to write on spec, please send in a synopsis to pitch for a commission.

Please email your article(s) or pitch(es) to:
