Engines and sterngear - Volvo 2002

question

My 1984 Feeling 920 is fitted with a Volvo 2002 with conventional stern drive (not S drive). The gearbox has an oil leak and has to be topped up occassionally. I bought the boat last November and had the engine serviced in January. The boat has been in commission since then (I sail in the Med). I have had to refill from the bottom to top mark on the dipstick three times in that period. he bottom of the gearbox is wet with oil. I plan to have the problem looked at by the local dealer next winter. Is it wise to leave it until then and is there anything I could do myself?

Another query: The engine has a starting handle, but the pin that engages with the handle is missing. There is just a hole in the shaft. Is it possible to replace the pin, or does the shaft have to be replaced? Thanks for your time.

answer

Dear John,

Provided that the colour of your oil is quite normal, it should be the same colour as the day it went in, there should be no problem continuing to use the gearbox until the autumn.

Does the amount of oil on the outside seem consistant with what you are putting in. If not you may have a leak into the bell housing. There is a plate on the bottom of the box and it could be that this seal has failed. You may well be able to tackle this yourself if this is the problem. If you clean up the box thoroughly you shoul be able to get an idea if the oil is coming from the front, back or bottom.

Volvo gearboxes are expensive, as are the parts. You should have no problem in removing the box yourself if you can get at it. Ask your UK dealer his opinion about the likely cost of repairing the oil seal, A possible solution is to get a secondhand or reconditioned box to take out with you.

My drawings of the 2002 seem to show that the starting handle housing has two slots, one opposite the other, in which case you should be able to drive in a new 'dog'

All the best,

Pat Manley
