Sniffy the dog and his owner were rescued by the RNLI after their yacht’s steering failed off the North East coast of Scotland.

Experienced yachtsman Anthony Train, aged 60, had been sailing with his seadog Sniffy aboard his Kingfisher 20 type yacht Francis Prowd between Peterhead and Orkney, when his rudder began to malfunction.

With the steering gone and being around 50 miles out to sea Anthony wasted no time in contacting the Coastguard who immediately launched the RNLI Fraserburgh lifeboat.

With Coxswain Vic Sutherland, Mechanic Shane Richardson and volunteer crewmembers Kenneth and Marten Ritchie, Derek Wiseman, Stephen Brown and Nathan Whyte aboard, the lifeboat left the harbour at high speed.

The Fraserburgh lifeboat Willie and May Gall returned to port at 5.20am yesterday morning, 28 June, with the disabled yacht in tow.

‘I was amazed at how quickly you got there’ Anthony told Coxswain Vic Sutherland after both were back safe on dry land.
