Skysail could use 30% less fuel for ships (and confuse the colregs)

A 132m long Carrier MS “Beluga SkySails” of the Bremen-based Beluga Shipping has set sail for Venezuela using a 160m2 SkySail – like a parachute – which the company hopes could save them 30% of the fuel bill.

“Interest in the SkySails technology among shipping companies from all over the world was already high before, but especially during the last year and in light of the rising oil prices it has increased considerably,” states founder of the company Stephan Wrage.
