Date set for Beachy Head makeover in East Sussex

Work is set to begin on restoring Beachy Head lighthouse’s
distinctive red and white stripes in September this year.

Trinity
House said in 2011 that the lighthouse was no longer considered an important
day navigation mark and it could no longer justify the cost of repainting its
faded stripes.

But a campaign group worked tirelessly to raise more than £27,000 for the work
to be carried out.

Now the date has been set – Tuesday 17 September.

The agreement of the paint specification and the finalisation of the
contractors (which is still ongoing with the Trinity House procurement
team) has played a part in the process taking a little longer than expected.

Project
spokesman Rob Wassell, a key member of the Save the Stripes team, said: ‘Finally, we have a date -
17 September 2013.

‘I
have updated my website with this information and
even included a timer so that we can all keep track of when the painting will
start.’
