12 gigs to compete in punishing sprint

Budding solo yachtswoman Katie Miller is to start this year’s Hamble River Raid, a punishing 5-mile sprint in 15′ gigs from Hamble to Bursledon and back.

At least 12 entries are expected for the race, which starts on Saturday at 1200 from Hamble Quay. Organised by the Hamble Sea Scouts, who will be fielding a number of entries, the entry list includes last year’s winners, sponsored by Yachting Sports.

The gigs are identical heavy GRP boats, rowed by up to six oarsmen, which require a lot of energy to keep them at hull speed over the long course.

Ashore, a hog roast, real ale, Pimms and wine will be available to refresh weary competitors and spectators alike. Spectators watching from Hamble Quay will get a good view of the start and finish, but much of the course will be visible from anywhere between Hamble and Bursledon. As well as the gig race there will also be sprint races from the quay for all comers.
