Free boating and sailing activities at On the Water Day event at Cowes Yacht Haven on Friday 29 May from 10am to 4pm, plus a flare amnesty for seafarers

This May half term people of all ages will have the chance to try out boating and sailing activities at a free event at Cowes Yacht Haven.

On Friday 29 May, the British Marine Federation (BMF) Isle of Wight is once again hosting its On The Water Day 2015 at the marina, which is home to international sailing events such as the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week and the Round the Island Race.

During the event participants will be able to get out on the water under sail or under power, from rigid inflatable boat rides to the UKSA’s Try Sail fleet.

On The Water is an initiative from the BMF that aims to encourage as many people as possible to get involved with boating activities. Whether it’s kayaking, sailing or inland boating, On The Water breaks down the barriers to entry into watersports. Find out more at www.onthewater.co.uk

The programme of the day runs from 10am to 4pm and will include demonstrations from the RNLI and Royal Yacht Squadron, entertainment for all the family and a showcase of Island-built boats, such as Red Funnel’s Red Jet 3.

The marina is also expecting to have a flare amnesty for seafarers to dispose of their out of date flares.

Jon Pridham, managing director of Cowes Yacht Haven, said: ‘We’re delighted to welcome back the BMF On The Water Day to Cowes Yacht Haven.

‘Last year was a brilliant success with lots of first timers getting out onto the water and enjoying themselves. It was a great way to showcase the different sports and pastimes available in boating and sailing.’
