More than 50mph gusts in several areas

Gusts of 50mph have been recorded in many areas across the UK and are approaching 100mph in Scotland, as the New Year begins with a battering.

Winds peaked at 97mph at 6am today in Islay in the Hebrides, as the Met Office confirmed that Scotland (pictured – the Knab, Shetlands) is expected to bear the brunt of the conditions.

However, severe weather warnings are also in place for most of southern and western England, west Wales – where 93mph gusts were recorded at Aberdaron – and Northern Ireland.

The weather did cause the Port of Dover to close, but it has now reopened.
