Thrilling finish to Round the World Race

Tens of thousands of well-wishers warmly cheered the crews of the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race as they arrived in Hull on Saturday 17 July, at the end of their 35,000 mile challenge of a lifetime.

The 10 yachts had battled storms and extremes of temperature, and the occasional mishap, on their race through the 14 gruelling legs that marked the circumnavigation.

First over the line was the Irish entry, Cork, giving them second place overall.

Just behind them was Hull & Humber, meaning the home boat gained fourth position – a remarkable feat, considering the original skipper had his leg broken by a rogue wave off Japan. H&H‘s replacement skipper, Justin Taylor, took the applause as they sailed into their home port.

Third in the final leg, and taking overall victory, was Spirit of Australia
