The RNLI assisted two racing yachts in separate incidents during Winter Series racing in Poole Harbour yesterday (Sunday 6 December), as PBO boat tester and photographer, David Harding explains:

'Two incidents during the Sunday winter-series racing yesterday (Sunday 6 December) - both in the harbour, only a few yards off Poole YC. It was fairly breezy and, by the standards of the harbour, also on the choppy side.
'First an R19 keelboat capsized - which it's not really supposed to do. The lifeboat appeared and the pictures tell the rest of the story. Then about an hour later a GK24 lost its rig about 100 yards before the finish line. Another shout for the lifeboat...'

I am not a stick in the mud I too was racing in pretty hectic conditions in Cork harbour on Saturday. I think it is wrong and totally wasteful that the RNLI should be involved in Club Racing rescues. If we want to go out racing in questionable conditions our safety is our problem. I would expect that safety, personnel and equipment should be the responsibility of the racing organisers.I hope in the cases photographed that there is a very very large donation to the RNLI.
