On the Thames, carry a VHF and keep a lookout behind

For vessels over 45ft (13.7m) long, a VHF is mandatory within the jurisdiction of the Port of London Authority, writes Stefan Meyric-Hughes in CB magazine. And there's no speed limit on the river below Wandsworth Bridge, so many, if not most of the vessels you see will be going (or coming up behind you) as fast as they can.
