Don't over-tighten your sterngland

It's tempting to do your sterngland up as tight as you can to stop water coming in - but try and resist the temptation. If you do, both the shaft and the bearing surfaces will overheat and wear rapidly. Stuffing boxes are meant to leak a little - two or three drips of water a minute is about right.
