How to save an outboard that's gone overboard

If an outboard gets submerged (while not running), the most important thing is to keep the time exposed to the air to a minimum. The atmosphere begins to rust machined engine parts almost immediately, so if you can't get the engine dismantled and cleaned straight away, it's better off back in the drink - preferably in a barrel of fresh water, which will begin to rinse off the salt.

Good tip this, keep it in the water if you can (but this is usually hopelessly impractical as you are in the dingy when you drop it off and nobody fancies rowing all the way ashore with a drogue-engine in tow!) get it onboard safely and stow best you can, get it ashore and seek out a wheely-bin to suspend it in (use a length of wood) and fill with tap water before adding a bottle of Fairy Liquid, perfect at such a time, its a wetting agent and degreaser, initially the mechanic may be puzzled later he should commend you!
