Engine parts start to rust in air almost immediately

If an outboard gets submerged (while not running), the most important thing is to keep the time exposed to the air to a minimum. The atmosphere begins to rust machined engine parts almost immediately, so if you can’t get the engine dismantled and cleaned straight away, it’s better off back in the drink – preferably in a barrel of fresh water, which will begin to rinse off the salt.
